Instant installation with accuracy you can count on - If you race sailboats, the benefits of an accurate speedometer are probably already fairly obvious to you. Even still, you might not sail with a speedo because you can't be bothered to drill holes in your hull and wire-up a paddlewheel transducer. Or maybe you already have a through-hull speedo but you're sick of the transducer geting fouled and you're never quite sure if the instrument is properly calibrated. The award winning SpeedPuck is completely self contained and can be installed in seconds, without tools. Instead of using a paddlewheel, the SpeedPuck calculates your speed by measuring the Doppler shift GPS signals to provide you with an updated reading twice a second. The SpeedPuck never needs to be calibrated and maintains accuracy at all speeds.

See what you can't feel - A less than half-knot change in boatspeed doesn't sound like much. It doesn't feel like much either and that's the problem. Easy to read - The SpeedPuck's sunlight-readable high-contrast LCD screen features 27mm (1.1") tall digits in a font that's optimised for readability. This means that if your boat's under 40 ft long you'll be able to mount the SpeedPuck on your mast and read it easily from anywhere in the cockpit, even if you don't have perfect vision.

Automatic shift tracking - The SpeedPuck's shift tracker locks on to the mean heading for your tack and then shows deviations from that heading with an easy-to-read bar graph. If you tack or jibe again, the shift tracker detects this, resets the bar graph and locks on to your new tack. All this happens 100% automatically, you don't need to press any buttons to make it happen. The SpeedPuck constantly crunches the numbers for you in the background so that, whenever you happen to glance at the instrument, you can see how far you're up or down.

1. Changing to a more durable and flexible adhesive for attaching the back lid on to the main housing.

2. Changing the circuit board design based on studying the failure modes of some returns that will not turn on.

3. Changing to a new version of the firmware that, for four seconds after the device is switched on, shows the battery state of charge as a number between 0 and 100. The battery capacity is very big compared to both the device's power consumption and the solar panel output. As a result, it takes a long time to run down the battery (about 100 hours running with no sun) and a long time to charge it from empty (about 50 hours in full sun). It seems like a common cause of returns is the user, over several months, running the battery down to empty and then assuming the device is broken when the battery indicator still shows empty after they leave it in the sun all day.

Velocitek's hope is that with the new firmware users will be able to see when the battery is getting gradually run down and start leaving the device in the sun earlier. Also, they will be able to see when the solar charging is working, even if it is not immediately reflected on the battery indicator.
