What type and size of fender do I need for my boat? It's not that complicated but here are a few 'fender facts' to help you. (See below for full range of fenders and accessories)
Type
Flat Fender - foam buffers used on small boats.
Round Fender - soft vinyl 'ball' used mainly on the bigger boats with a flared bow. Classically used on fishing and other commercial boats.
Cylindrical Fender - classic boat/yacht fender with an eye at each end used on most boats or yachts. It hangs down over the side vertically and secured with a rope or can be used horizontally.
Centre Rope Cylindrical Fender - vertical or horizontal fender for boats with a hole running through the middle.

Basic Rules To Follow
Use one fender per 10 feet (3 metres) of waterline.
Use minimum of three fenders (maximum beam, fore and aft) - but more fenders the better to prevent damage.

Position - hang them so the bottom of the fender just skims the water surface and then raise one or two inches (2.5 to 5cm)
Tie fenders as low as possible on the boat and to a solid point e.g. anchor point or cleat instead of lifelines which are not designed for stress.
Finally, make sure your fenders are cleaned and inflated to the right amount - a little care and attention will save you money in the long run.
